Who makes up a collaborative team

A collaborative team supports families with clarity, fairness, and emotional safety

Who makes up a collaborative team?

In this approach to family-inclusive estate planning and inheritance dispute resolution, each family is supported by a carefully selected and Collaboratively trained professional team.

Each member brings a distinct and essential expertise to ensure clarity, fairness, and emotional safety throughout the process.

The collaborative team typically includes:

Collaborative Lawyers for each participant – to give legal guidance, support resolution and ensure any agreements are binding and enforceable.

A Financial Adviser – A specialist – either an accountant or financial adviser – who acts impartially to “crunch the numbers and explain them to the team.” This role ensures that transparent and comprehensive financial information is shared and translated into clear, comparable scenarios and projections, helping families understand short- and long-term implications of different settlement or planning options.

A Communications Coach – Often a mediator, psychologist, counsellor, or skilled coach who acts as “the holder of the process.” Their role is to manage emotional dynamics, keep discussions productive, and ensure all voices are heard in a respectful environment. The Coach usually chairs the meetings, supports individuals when needed, and helps guide the team to communicate with clarity and empathy.

All professionals involved must be specially trained in collaborative practice, not merely self-described as collaborative, to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the process.

Other experts (like valuers, family or business accountants, tax advisers or cultural consultants) may be brought in where needed to support fair and informed outcomes.

This interdisciplinary model ensures that every aspect – legal, financial, and relational – is handled with precision and care so that holistic and workable plans and agreements can be reached.
